"Come on Mosskit!" my brother, Fiercekit, yelled at me. Most of our littermates were just outside the nursery already following Violetkit and Sunkit to play games while Hopekit and I stayed behind because we were so tired. I peeked out toward my brothers and sisters only to see Tallkit's pelt right in front of my face.

"Tallkit!" I complained, "get your lazy pelt out of the nursery so Hopekit and I can get some rest! You know we're not as strong as the rest of you. Fiercekit, I've told you a thousand times - we're not going out there to play with you guys until we get better!"

"Come on, Tallkit. These lazy lumps of fur will never become full Warriors anyway. Violetkit and Sunkit are battling it out again. Let's pretend they're rival clan leaders! I'm going to be Violetkit's deputy!" with that, he charged out of the nursery, with Tallkit just behind him claiming to be Sunkit's deputy.

I looked over at Hopekit again, remembering how bright, active, and cheerful she was the first few moons of our lives. Now all she seemed to do was whimper and sleep, unless she was snapping at you for getting too close to her. I sighed wistfully, wanting nothing more than to live like we did our first few moons, getting into our mother's fur and getting things all messed up because there were so many of us. Thunderkit came racing inside just then, interrupting my musings, her eyes glowing with the excitement of a battle.

"Mosskit!" she hissed quietly, seeing I was awake while Hopekit was asleep. "Sunkit's injured Violetkit! She's bleeding and we don't know how to get it to stop!"

"So? Go to Songecho. You know, our medicine cat that's been trained for this kind of thing?" I replied somewhat bitterly. Hopekit was finally sleeping and I didn't want her bothered. I looked into Thunderkit's worried eyes, the excitement of the fight had died the moment I had mentioned the medicine cat. Worried now myself, I asked my sister, "Is it Mintstar? Last I knew he was on his last life..."

Thunderkit nodded solemnly while I shook myself off and tried not to groan too much as I went out of the nursery to where my sister was bleeding while Fiercekit tried to stop the blood by licking the wound. I shook my head, wondering how it had escalated to this and sent Thunderkit, who had padded silently out of the nursery after me to the medicine den to get cobwebs. I'd bled enough on my own to know that much at least. Songecho had talked to me and Hopekit about taking one of us to be his apprentice in a few weeks when all of us would get our apprentice names. Thunderkit came back with the cobwebs and watched with Sunkit, Fiercekit, and Violetkit as I haphazardly put cobwebs on Violetkit's wounds. Songecho came up just as I was finishing and scared me out of my fur.

"I knew you'd do well. I still remember the first time you visited me because of an injury." he said as he laid an appreciative paw on my shoulder.

"How's Mintstar? Will he be okay? Tell me more about that first trip to the medicine den. I don't remember anything about it." I asked after I'd recovered enough to say anything.

"You and your questions!" Songecho laughed at me, then sobered up as he confirmed, "Mintstar is on his last life and is very weak, but is determined to see you seven made apprentices and your mother back to her deputy duties before he leaves Skyclan for good. Though Tailblaze has done a wonderful job filling in while Silverleaf has been busy taking care of you." He mrrowed with laughter as he recalled my mother trying to keep all seven of us out of trouble. "Come with me to my den and I'll tell you that story. Fiercekit. Help Mosskit bring Violetkit to my den. She still needs to be properly patched up. Who did this?"

While Fiercekit and I took Violetkit to Songecho's den, Songecho dealt with  Sunkit and Tallkit and herded them and Thunderkit back into the nursery with Silverleaf and Hopekit, reminding them all to keep as silent as possible while Hopekit and Silverleaf slept. By the time Songecho had returned to his den, Fiercekit and I had gotten Violetkit settled into a mossy patch in his den and she was sleeping. Songecho sent Fiercekit back to the nursery with more than a few harsh words before turning to me.

Songecho started in on his story, "I remember the day well. Tinystar had just lost his eighth life to those stupid rats that still plague us, though at least we don't have to deal with them and rival clans like I hear the other forest cats do, when I got called into the nursery to tend to you. It's a good thing Silverleaf is the only queen in there as there is hardly any room for just the eight of you. Thank goodness you seven usually spend your time just outside the nursery or none of the rest of us would ever be able to get in! Anyway, I got called to the nursery where you lay bleeding. I honestly thought you'd lost too much blood to be saved, but your entire family, including Patchleg, insisted I try. I did so, fully expecting to lose you every second, but I succeeded where I was sure I would fail. Once you were on the mend, I questioned your littermates as to what had happened. Hopekit answered me." Songecho paused to breathe and I tried to remember what he was telling me. I couldn't remember any of it.

"'We were just playing!' Hopekit whined, 'Sunkit and Violetkit had found something shiny they in the nursery and we all looked for it. Mosskit found it first, but we all climbed over and around her to get to it because she was a mousebrain and told us all where it was. I think it was probably Tallkit that swatted her aside, but I can't be sure. He never knows his own strength anyway. Mosskit got swatted aside and the next thing we know we heard a THWACK! When we looked around, we found Mosskit lying in a pool of her own blood and ran out to call you.' Hopekit finished and I looked carefully at the rest of you before demanding to see the shiny thing that had caused this whole fiasco." Songecho shook his head, remembering, before his eyes got dark and he continued, "It was a twoleg thing. That much I was immediately sure of. After examining it closely and smelling twolegs on it, I told Hopekit to go back to Silverleaf while I talked to Violetkit and Sunkit. I took them and the twoleg thing back to my den where I could keep an eye on you while talking to them where other little ears wouldn't hear me." Song echo shook his head again, his eyes still dark, before checking on Violetkit. He fixed the haphazard job I'd done on the cobwebs and nosed my sister a little, checking the damage. When he looked up, he seemed surprised to see me still sitting there. "Why are you still here?!" He asked me sternly.

I blinked several times before answering, "What was the twoleg thing Violetkit and Sunkit hid in the nursery and where did they find it? You were telling me about my first visit to the medicine den..."

It was Songecho's turn to blink several times, "yes, of course!" he muttered, "I'm
forgetting things much too easily. Must be about time to retire to the elder's den. But first I must train a new medicine cat. Now, as for the twoleg thing, Violetkit and Sunkit had actually found it in the nursery. It was you and Tallkit who had originally found it. You two had snuck out of camp and wandered into the area with the twoleg dens until you found something to bring back. Something about proving to Fiercekit and Thunderkit that you had been there and a dare. Kits! I kept the twoleg thing here, do you want to see it?"

Songecho's eyes glittered a little while my eyes went huge and I nodded. He went into his store and rummaged around for a while before bringing out one of the strangest objects I'd ever seen, or ever remember seeing given that I had supposedly brought the thing into camp in the first place. The twoleg thing looked like a twig off a tree that had no leaves, but it's bark was raised up in a spiral and it was shiny. It was also broken on both ends. Songecho let me look at it for awhile longer before abruptly picking it up and sending me back to the nursery with one last bit from his memory, "You showed great promise as a medicine cat even way back then. Now, back to the nursery with you so I can focus on taking care of your sister."
